That is exactly the scenario that many third-world countries are worried
about. Apparently, Monsanto seeds are easy to obtain in many countries, even if
they are not officially approved for use. This seed has now intermixed with the
native varieties.
The US pushed the third world countries to patent seed
stocks. If crop patents were ever allowed, large percentages of the farmers
would be farming GMO seed without Monsanto's permission - and be liable for
it.
This puts the third world countries in a terrible bind. Either make the
US trade representative happy, or shut down your domestic agriculture.
To
give an idea of how bad this problem is, look what happened in Canada. We can't
sell non-GMO soybeans to Europe, because all of the seed stocks are genetically
contaminated. This is irreversible genetic pollution of the worst kind. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
