English food
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, May 12 2013 @ 02:03 AM EDT
Among your examples of fine English cuisine, you forgot to mention "spotted
dick."

For the American readers, I should hasten to explain that a dish with that name
really does exist in England. If you are starting to think that the English
taste in food is really strange, more explanation is clearly needed. A rough
translation of the name into American would be "freckle faced
Richard." Most Americans would describe the actual dish as a round slice of
canned Boston brown bread with currants, perhaps with a small pitcher of cream
sauce on the side. The brown bread with currants can be said to resemble the
round face of a small boy with freckles. Hence the name. What was your twisted
mind expecting, anyway?

For the British readers, suffice it to say that it can be quite difficult for an
American to keep a straight face while asking to be served spotted dick, or even
while asking what the name is supposed to mean.
