"There's a world of difference in teaching quality."
There is, indeed. I can still, after more than 50 years, recall my really good
teachers clear back to the sixth grade (plus one in the 2nd grade) -- their
names, faces and some common mannerisms or statements by each -- almost as if it
were very recent. One bad one I still recall (exceptional), and the rest I can't
think of.
Good teachers hold the students' interest without the need for histrionics,
screaming, threats, etc. A good example was a gentleman in our Civil Air Patrol
Squadron many years back, who taught in a local school system, and taught model
rocketry to our Cadets. Often as not, he'd rearrange the classroom seating in a
circle, with him seated on the circle, and the students eagerly participated
(some drawn in in spite of themselves), not because of the subject matter
(though it mattered to most of them) but because of his teaching style.
Sadly, he later left the school system, complaining of not really being allowed
to teach, and a lot of hassle in a very untrusting atmosphere. But he
immediately got a job as head of a local planetarium (associated with a big
museum, too).
Teaching is really a special talent, and it seems the best of them is being
driven away (much as in the teacher resignation linked above) -- a major loss
for today's kids.
