Teen tells terrible teacher that tedious torpid tutelage is not true teaching technique
Authored by: Wol on Friday, May 10 2013 @ 11:21 AM EDT
I regularly have this spat with my teacher daughter. And her complaint
(justified) is that she has so many targets to reach, and so many students to
look after, and so many restrictions on what she is allowed to do, that any good
successful teaching is more by accident than design ... :-(

Cheers,
Wol

There's a world of difference in teaching quality. I recall back to my own
school days. There were some excellent teachers and some "by the
book" types, along with a couple that were truly bad. Guess which ones got
the results. I recall my grade 12 electronics teacher demonstrating signal to
noise ratio (something that's important in communications systems). He started
out talking in a soft voice and we could still hear & understand him. Then
he started tapping on a steel cabinet with a steel yard stick. We could no
longer hear him. He started talking louder, so we could hear him again, and
then started hitting the cabinet harder. At the end of the demonstration, even
though he was yelling, we couldn't hear a word he was saying because of all the
noise from his banging on the cabinet. I doubt anyone left that class not
knowing what signal to noise ratio meant.

I've had a few other good teachers and they're the ones that stand out in my
mind. The rest seemed to have just disappeared into the mists of time.
