John Steele talks to Ars Technica
Authored by: ailuromancy on Friday, May 10 2013 @ 10:15 AM EDT

John Steele forgets about taking the 5th, and gives an interview for Ars Technica.

I am not sure, but I think I found an honest statement in there:

I know from past experience at Steele Hansmeier that over half the clients we got never made any money off suing pirates.

If you look carefully, you might spot another one.

Geek log likes to insert spaces into long links. If the link above does not work, try this without any spaces:

Android is crushing Apple and Microsoft in the mobile device market
Authored by: Gringo_ on Friday, May 10 2013 @ 12:08 PM EDT

How long until PC OEMs decide to take a gamble on the winning mobile OS and load Android onto PCs?

I am sure that Microsoft is asking itself that same question. I am also sure they will resort no end of dirty tricks to prevent such an outcome, as they did to prevent OEMs from putting Linux on NetBooks. Apple too is quickly developing a devious skill set of its own, funded by the endless billions in capital they have amassed.

Watch for lots of dirty fighting in the years to come. It's a battle for the survival of these deeply entrenched megacorporations. Apple has endless cash reserves to apply to waging war, whereas Microsoft has highly developed underhanded tactical skills and absolutely no moral principles to stand in its way of using them to fullest effect. Microsoft also has press and politicians in its pockets in equal measure. Google meanwhile, seems to be keeping a low profile, and fights doggedly for the long term. It seems to be outflanked by scrupulous opponents.

For now, our goals have much in common with Google in many ways, while at the same time we are repulsed by Apple's desire to contain us in a walled garden or Microsoft's vision of world domination. In the end, Google may require our help, with phone in campaigns and text messages sent from our Android phones to the decision makers and influential politicians of this world.

Documentary.

People accept without agreeing, even reading. Has an effect on privacy. Hope it explains that this is also the case for software licenses. This kind of acceptance should not be legally valid.

New Zealand government closes door on software patents
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, May 10 2013 @ 03:59 PM EDT
Arstechnica:
New Zealand government closes door on software patents

Apparently they have removed the weaselwords "as such".

The latest language states clearly that "a computer program is not an invention," and is not eligible for patent protection.
