... was as a direct jab at MS' FUD - yup!
I can't imagine any way MS
could claim the International Space Station as a hobbyist's platform - and given
the decision to use Linux, as opposed to MS, it's gotta be a pretty good slap in
the fudface.
MS began with the hobbyist as a target
Of
that I'm not so sure.... began by Bill Gates, a hobbyist - that rings closer to
the truth for me.
security, reliability, and efficiency have never
really progressed beyond the hobby-grade level; it's a toy operating
system
100% agreed.
Using Windows on the
ISS
I was actually shocked upon reading this. I'd thought they'd
been using Linux on the ISS from the begining. Of course I'm still not sure of
what was upgraded. Given the reports I've read, I'm under the
impression:
A: the primary ISS systems have always been Linux
B:
for whatever reason, some of the visitors have used MS laptops and are
converting to Linux on the laptop
I didn't get into FOSS for
the philosophy;
I did. For me, I saw where MS' EULA was going and
didn't like it. As a result, I looked for an alternative to which I could agree
to the license terms. Needless to say I've been using Linux since '98 and
installing an upgrade to Gentoo at the moment.
For myself, the high level
of quality is a pretty thick layer of icing on the cake. If the quality wasn't
there, I'd probably be busy fixing the code and installing a new system far less
often :)
