Some patent claims dropped from Apple v Samsung II
Authored by: bugstomper on Tuesday, July 09 2013 @ 09:45 PM EDT
This is somewhat related to this article, but not exactly, hence I'm posting in the Off Topic thread.

Pacer shows some filings by Apple and Samsung in Apple v Samsung II responding to Judge Koh's order that they streamline the case by reducing the number of patents, claims, and accused infringing devices. (As mentioned in this story on Groklaw)

I'll leave it to PJ to eventually post the PDFs of the filings so you can have them from a trusted source, but here is the gist, the list of patent claims being dropped and being kept in the case by Apple and by Samsung. I notice that unlike the streamlining that Judge Alsup required in Oracle v Google, these are being dismissed without prejudice.

Asiana pilots say they used automatic speed controls for landing
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 10 2013 @ 01:28 AM EDT

The pilots involved in the Asiana Airlines flight 214 crash in San Francisco told federal investigators that they set the automatic throttle controls on the plane for a proper landing speed and then discovered to their surprise that at the last moment, the plane had slowed far beyond that setting.

Why weren't they watching the speedometer? I use the cruise control on my car quite a bit on the open highway. Even so, I take a moment to verify my speed from time to time. - Gringo

Apple asks agency to halt iPhone and iPad ban set for August
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 10 2013 @ 09:48 AM EDT

Less than four weeks before an import ban on popular Apple products will take effect, the iPhone maker is asking the International Trade Commission to stay the ban while a court considers an appeal.

In a motion filed Monday with the ITC, Apple said the ban, set for August 5th, will “sweep away an entire segment of Apple’s product offerings,” and also harm its phone carrier partners.

zimmerman testifies about testifying
Authored by: YurtGuppy on Wednesday, July 10 2013 @ 03:56 PM EDT
Way off topic, but you are my go-to guys for lawyerly stuff.

In the Zimmerman trial today, the judge asks the defendant, Zimmerman if he has
decided whether or not he wants to testify. He says he doesn't know yet (more
or less...).

The surprising part to me was that the judge had Zimmerman sworn in and
continues to ask him about when he will know whether or not he will be
testifying.

If she has him sworn in, isn't he already testifying? Do they usually follow
this sort of procedure in a criminal trial.

Way OT: Shades of Abbott & Costello
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 10 2013 @ 05:10 PM EDT

I learned today that 2 - 1 = 7.

It had to do with an un-anticipated implicit conversion on a date with regards UTC and subtracting an hour.

I couldn't help but think of the A&C math where 13 * 7 = 28.

Microsoft unveils reorganisation
Authored by: tiger99 on Thursday, July 11 2013 @ 01:02 PM EDT
BBC

I don't see anything there that will save M$, in fact the opposite is true.

The "One Microsoft" strategy would seek to bring together diverse areas such as Windows, Windows Phone, Xbox, Surface, Office 365 and others.
Much the same as the failed Gates strategy, where he saw Windoze on washing machines, where it was complete and utter overkill as well as a nuisance, and on aircraft, where fortunately it was utterly uncertifiable, otherwise the BSOD would have taken on a new meaning.
He said: "Today's announcement will enable us to execute even better on our strategy to deliver a family of devices and services that best empower people for the activities they value most and the enterprise extensions and services that are most valuable to business," he said.
So people are empowered by vendor lock-in? I don't think so. What empowers people is freedom to choose what they want to use, and that comes only from free and open data formats so that files can be acccessed, read and edited anywere.

I predict that Ballmer will be gone within 18 months, as the death spiral of M$ is seen to accelerate and the investors get even more nervous than they are right now.

Nokia's Lumia 1020 features 41 megapixel camera
Authored by: tiger99 on Thursday, July 11 2013 @ 01:08 PM EDT
BBC

That is not going to save the company.

Analysts who have tested the device said that it was "without doubt" the best smartphone camera on the market.

But they added that was not a guarantee that it would be a bestseller.
Pointless having so many pixels when the real problems are the small, cheap and nasty lens that has to be used in phones, and the laws of physics which work against small pixels at low light levels.

(On the other hand, 41Mp in a large sensor, with a good lens, in a proper camera, is extremely attractive.)

This is going to be yet another of Mr. Elop's Flops.
