Previously Nokia had released the 808 which was Symbian based with a 41Mpixel
camera. This new model apparently has a similar but different sensor but for the
same effects.
The main use is to allow oversampling where several pixels are combined,
allegedly to reduce noise. The result is a 5Mp image that is supposed to be
noise free even in low light. The problem is that very high density pixels
generate much more noise which has to be processed away.
The other use is for digital zoom that can give a 5Mp image at 3x or 4x but
without oversampling.
So it is not 'innovative', the 808 was but that was a couple of years ago.
Other makers are putting Wi-Fi and phones into real cameras, such as Panasonic
did a couple of years ago (but Japan market only) and Samsung are doing now.
These have real zoom lenses with mainstream sensors.
