Nokia's Lumia 1020 features 41 megapixel camera
Authored by: complex_number on Thursday, July 11 2013 @ 01:59 PM EDT
The essential thing is a 'good lens'

I've been using a Nikon D800 (36Mp) body for the past year. The quality of the
optics can make or break a picture.
A sensor this size can show up the imperfections in a lens.

Putting a sensor this size in a phone is IMHO a pure marketing gimmick. Some of
the reviews I've seen of the camera indicate that there is a lot of intra-pixel
noise.

Then there is the storage. Everytime I press the shutter on the D800, I use 80Mb
of storage. 62Mb for the Raw image and 18Mb for the JPEG. It won't take long for
the internal storage of the camera to be exhausted.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which
is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?

Its innovation!

Ballmer says Microsoft is re-orging to accelerate innovation... so we start
with a wholly trojaned subsidiary, Nokia, and announce a 41 megapixel phone.

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but my phone calls don't care about pixels.
Strangely enough, my camera does pictures quite well, and does it in only 24
megapixels. I don't see any need for a 41 megapixel phone that doesn't add
anything to my calls, and takes worse pictures than my 24 megapixel camera.

I do see a need for Elop to try and make it look like Nokia is still in the
game, but it would be better to focus on building a real product rather than
pasting useless bling on a mostly useless phone.

Yup, right on track (train wreck is probably insensitive just now)

professional photographer who needs a quality camera on the move
Authored by: Wol on Thursday, July 11 2013 @ 10:09 PM EDT
And just who is that?

My 16MP camera costs about £600. The quality is excellent. I'm lusting after a
newer model (waiting for the price to come down from its current £1000), but the
main features I want are not pixels at all. The D7100 is weather-sealed which
means I don't need to worry (so much) about it getting wet.

It also doesn't have a low-bypass filter (or whatever it's called) so photos
won't need sharpening. Leading to far better "straight out of the
camera" quality. Okay, that latter feature relies on the fact that it's a
24MP camera, but I wouldn't upgrade from 16MP just because "24 is
more".

Pros would rather have the right camera for the job, and imho a smartphone is
not "the right camera" in any circumstance, unless your main camera is
out of action for some reason.

Mind you, I'm going to be having fun with my camera on Saturday with the Thames
Barge Race...

If anybody wants to watch it, I think it starts at 12 midday. From Greenwich,
and finishing at Westminster Bridge. Anywhere along the bank should give you
decent views. I'll be watching it from the Pocahontas :-)

Cheers,
Wol
