I will refer you to the case that profoundly influenced me many years ago. Two
teenage girls accused of murder. The prison van surrounded by a lynch mob every
time they made a court appearance. The girls were convicted and - as per the law
- were each sentenced to life.
18 months later (these were teenage girls remember) the convictions were
quashed. The girls COULDN'T have it.
Okay, this case seems pretty clear (back then, the media circus gave me serious
concerns right from the start), but as soon as you get "trial by mob"
you need to be VERY careful. And I guess those girls were lucky they weren't
American - UK Appeal Judges are far more ready to overturn a jury verdict if
they feel they have cause. I think there are several "known to be
innocent" guys on Death Row?
Cheers,
