I remember all the fun us neighborhood terrorists, oops, I mean teenagers, used
to have with a piece of pipe, a little carbide and some of that dangerous
dihydrogen monoxide stuff... and occasionally getting high tech by adding a
spark plug and a 12 volt battery.

We'd all be shipped to Guantanamo today....

It's a matter of the current sociological climate, and planes could be
reclassified in a few years, for all we know. When I was growing up, firearms
were dangerous tools, rather than today's perceived embodiments of evil. In
1971, one of my third grade classmates brought a .22 bolt action rifle with
ammunition to school for show-and-tell. The teacher kept control of the
firearm, Vance (the owner) brought it out for show-and-tell, and there was no
hysteria. He and his parents would no doubt be no the way to Gitmo if that
happened today.

Charge Inflation - From Pop Bottle to WMD

Back when I was a kid, my friends and I experimented with making our own
gunpowder and the ingredients were readily available at the local drug store.
We certainly created a lot of smoke, if not actual explosions. I did a lot of
perhaps not so safe things that were driven by curiosity and certainly there was
no intent to harm anyone.
