Is this Judge being influenced by the
Oriental / Asian
concept of
"Face"?
I have never met Judge Koh, so I
wouldn't know for sure,
but I doubt it. The attitude you describe would, based
on my
own interaction with natives of Japan, come from being
steeped in that
sort of culture from an early age. We see
from Judge Koh's bi
ographical information that she was
born in Washington, DC, educated at
Harvard, and has worked
in and with various Governmental bodies for most if not
all
of her career, so chances are pretty good that she's been
exposed to and
steeped in American culture all her life.
While she certainly might
have soaked up at least some of
the "face-saving" attitude you describe from
her parents,
it's by no means a certainty, and I wouldn't be willing to
stipulate that it affects her decision-making if indeed the
attitude were
present.
