Engineers should refuse to design according to encumbered standards. They should
refuse to participate in standards bodies that allow encumbered standards. They
should actively seek out standards bodies that refuse to base standards on
encumbered technologies. They should actively seek out unencumbered standards
when possible and use those when deciding on a design.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Great post, one of the better ones around here.
BUT
When Dell, HP and other OEMs buy wifi chips and put them in computers,
they assume that the chip sale contains all licensing.
If someone supports that MS Windows software doesn't have a license to
access Moto patents in the wifi chip, the same argument could be made
about Linux.
According to the ruling, some 90+ companies all own wifi patents. So 90
companies can threaten Linux, if one supports Moto's position. They who
support OSS can not rationally support Moto.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
