Instead of being recognized as someone who found a huge security hole, he was arrested by the FBI and the Prosecutors Office has just promised him he could be facing 30+ years in prison if he co-operates.

But we shouldn't view that as being overzealous, it's incredibly lenient.

    To ping a device without permission = unauthorized and therefore a breach of CFAA
    1 billion devices pinged = 1 billion infringements
    It's incredibly lenient because the prosecution is only seeking 1 second in jail for each infringement
Oh how I was mostly joking instead of only partially joking with the above.
