'It says something sad (and alarming) about Microsoft’s business
if it now needs to pay companies to stay in the PC market.'

From my quick scan, that the only people left wanting a grunt PC
with keyboard mouse and big screen are content creators.
When the huge tablet market are all content consumers that
doesn't leave much of a market who are creators.
I couldn't see in that outstanding display of tunnel vision comments,
any recognition that an alternative for i/Mac/OS or Chrome/Android
already exists. The day of the Linux desktop has been and gone
and nobody noticed. P'raps someone will port Android to the
classic desktop paradigm, with tiled windows, and clickable
multitasking, without the restrictions imposed by the tiny
portable touch screen.
