It was also, apparently, known as 500-mile-an-hour tape, because, when used to
patch shot-up airplanes, it managed to stay on -- even at 500

Applying a little google-fu, there is an explanation of the name at
http://www.octanecreative.com/ducttape/duckvsduct.html. Of course, the
stories I have heard lead to a slightly different derivation... It seems it was
used for patching just about anything that had bullet holes in it to keep water
