ducktape -> duct tape
Authored by: eric76 on Thursday, April 25 2013 @ 11:08 PM EDT
While I agree that the proper term is "duct tape", because of all the
frequent referral to it as "duck tape" over the years, I think that
the term "duck tape" has become accepted as proper usage. It does
make me cringe, though.

Actually, Duck Tape (duckbrand.com) is the original, trademarked version of what's generically referred to "duct tape."

And "duct tape," despite the name, should not be used for sealing ductwork; it will eventually fail. There are metallic, non-woven tapes specifically designed for use on ductwork.

According to something I read a while back, the brand ducktape, was not
created originally for sealing ducts.

But I can't find my source anymore, and it may have been unreliable.

Actually, it was originally called "duck tape" as it was made from duck cloth, a type of canvas. The stuff commonly sold as duct tape is really not suitable for ducts.

NASA manned space missions always carry duct tape.

Duct tape is like the force. It has a dark side; it has a light side; and it
binds the universe together.

We call the cloth-based, super strong tape 'gaffers tape'. It's used to attach
lighting and other equipment in the movie biz. It's also used a lot by sound
engineers for location work. Check out any live concert venue. Consumers version
is lighter and weaker. Not suitable for ducts, as the adhesive will dry out and
the cloth will deteriorate over time. True duct tape is aluminum or fiberglass
based. It should be used only for sealing leaks, not for physical connections;
screws are still best for that.

The Mythbusters are probably the worlds experts on the application of duct tape.

My favorite show is: stranded on a desert island with only a skid of duct tape!

I'm not affiliated, etc, etc......

Duck tape exists, and is a (trademarked?) brand name. I've seen it for sale on
a shelf next to Gorilla Glue.
