Microsoft and Patching... Now there is an unholy mess if ever I've seen one.
When you install the latest .Net V4 runtime, and you start patching it, you end
up downloading 3 or 4 times the size of the original software in patch/reboot
cycles the seem to go on endlessly.
I recently installed a clean Server 2008 R2 build (for a POC)onto a new HP box.
When I'd finished its patch/reboot cycle, I install .Net runtime V4 and carried
on. Installing the base OS took 20 minutes. Patching took 4 hours to complete.
At the same time I was installing RHEL 6.4(same POC) onto a similar box. In that
4 hours I'd installed and patched the OS (one reboot), installed and configured
a load of IBM WebSphere software and was about to load the user applications.

Well, as they say, if you can't trust an OS's update mechanism, you
can't trust
the OS, but what chance do any of us have of pulling our family,
friends or
clients off the Microsoft teat (or, should i say,
syringe)?
My daughter and her friends now regularly borrow one of
my Ubuntu laptops. She claims that her Windows 7 laptop is too slow (several
years newer than my old thinkpad) and the MacBook doesn't play minecraft very
well with one button.
Most people don't really care what is running behind the
scenes they just want it to work. My daughter has Libre Office on her windows
laptop so it was easy for her and her friends to switch to the Ubuntu laptop.
Firefox is the pretty much the same on both platforms. A few years ago MSN was
a must have and now Facebook has taken it's place. The only thing I use the VM
for now is taxes. It's not hard to do a tax program, but there are annual
updates, and it costs money to have it certified. Add multiple juridictions
(federal, provincal, state...) and it gets costly and more complex.

The answer depends upon why they use Microsoft.
The biggie, as always, is whether or not functionally equivalent software exists
in the FLOSS world. For the majority of low-end users, the answer is probably
yes. For the majority of ultra-high end users, the answer is probably yes. For
that mid-range user, the answer is probably no.
