altitude can be calculated ...
Authored by: nsomos on Saturday, April 27 2013 @ 01:27 AM EDT
As long as there are four or more satellites signals
received, the math can calculate an altitude.
I've got an old Garmin Etrex circa 2002 that is capable
of reporting altitude.

There have already been successful uses of GPSs in orbit.
At least one was aboard an ARRL microsat, hobbyist satellite.

And
www.aralb.org/Presentations/Aralb.ppt
where slide 18 mentions GPS.

Then there is the Spaceborne GPS MISSION DIRECTORY
http://gauss.gge.unb.ca/grads/sunil/missions.htm
with well over 50 missions listed.

So .. yeah ... I would say it is entirely possible to
effectively use GPS technology in low earth orbit.
