I used an alphanumeric pager for a few months in the 1999. As well as the usual
pager function, it displayed news headlines and National Lottery numbers
broadcast from a central transmitter. Although it was hardly a new idea, I was
still impressed at the technology. Here it was, a tiny box that relayed
messages to me, (just about) anywhere in the country, instantly, reliably and
cheaply. Once the stuff of science fiction, now available to anyone with a few
quid to spare. And how did society celebrate this marvel of modern science? By
paying somebody to generate a short series of random integers, and paying
somebody else to tell me what they were. What a boon to mankind! How did I
ever live without it?
Fortunately that feature, like the rest of the device, could be turned off.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
