1993 vs 2013

I think the black device in the bottom/centre of the picture is a pager.
The device next to the walkman is a polaroid instamatic camera. It was the
height of technology to see your photograph only a minute or two after you took

it...

Parent asks ...
"what is the object bottom center of the picture,
and the object next to the yellow Walkman? "

The bottom center of the picture appears to me
to be a pager. In some cases these could be
used to get really short text messages.
And commonly just a phone number that one should call.

To the upper left of the walkman is a Polaroid
instant camera. One of the most advanced of these
was the SX70 which was an engineering marvel.
This appears to be a simpler, cheaper and more
recent Polaroid camera, perhaps an Amigo.
These could take still photos that would develop
without need of a darkroom or special equipment
in about a minute give or take.

It's hard to see, but I think bottom center is a pager. The one next to the Walkman is a Polaroid camera, an SX-70 I think (hard to see some details).

I still use a camcorder (a bit more recent than that) and a watch and a separate computer (both desktop and laptop, and I never did use the brick (cell phone), pager or PDA except as supplied by the company I was contracting to for about a year (in 2000) just before I retired.

And I only recently (a few months ago) got something like the bottom pic, mostly for traveling convenience (almost never used at home).

I only mention these details to indicate that not everyone subscribes to the "smart" phone (it's as dumb as any computer, and isn't a phone) as the current be-all/end-all device. Sure it does quite a few things, but few of them well (except for halfway decent, far from great, phone calls).

It's hard to tell, but judging from the size, it could be a pager. That
function has been replaced and more by texting.
