It doesn't even have to be absolutely true, the burden is to prove that the words are substantially true, this is called justification and is one of (I think) 4 defences to slander or Libel in the UK the others are fair comment, privilege and absolute privilege. The National Council for Civil Liberties (which is now known as Liberty) has a rather good website explaining your rights in many areas defamation is here
