Government Makes Rainwater Illegal
Authored by: PJ on Saturday, April 20 2013 @ 01:32 PM EDT
It's apparently real. But the facts are disputed, and the judgment from the court was that the guy lost. He claimed he was collecting rainwater, but the state said he was siphoning off water from a stream that fed into the city's water supply. The issue was a 1925 water rights law.

There are a lot of water laws out West, because there isn't enough and people raise livestock and crops and so you find laws deciding who gets what.

But it's nothing new. You perhaps know that when farmers and cattle owners live near each other, there is a lot of fighting going on, so you find a lot of laws out West to try to settle disputes without folks killing each other, which is what they used to do.

Also, some land is bought without water rights, which belong to someone else. It's complicated, but one thing is for sure -- it's not about increasing government control. These are old, old laws, and this particular case has been going on for at least ten years already.

In Seattle, if you get too serious with your rain barrels,
they'll shut you down.

Out here in The West, we've been fighting over the water since
forever.

In the West, whisky is for drinking and water is for fighting.

I assume it also applies to snow...

So perhaps he should be charging the state for removing their snow from his
driveway. ;-)
