Having a second source for components is good business practice for
manufacturers, it went out of fashion for while.
If your supply chain depends on a single source component with a long
development time and a large capital investment, that is a big risk. The
Taiwanese and Japanese component manufacturers would be first choice for Apple
because they have the technology base. I doubt any would be to keen to get in
bed with Apple alone due to Apples poor record with suppliers but if some of the
other manufacturers took an interest in developing a second source then it might
be enough.
A supplier needs customer diversity for security just like a manufacturer need
supplier diversity for the same reasons.
