Discontent with Google
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, April 18 2013 @ 09:40 PM EDT
You are supposed to be content that Google is giving you what they
suppose most people want, ie. local news first, from local sources.

I guess you, like me, are now searching for a news aggregator that
will link to sources closest to the action, or sources known from
their history to have reliable correspondents at the scene. I don't
care that they know where I live. If their algorithms were
working for me they should know that I discount their "local"
offerings and follow links towards the incident location.

Discontent with Google critics who invent stuff to disparage Google
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, April 18 2013 @ 11:25 PM EDT

Google news is fully and easily configurable. I live in Canada, and I don't watch the default Canadian spread. I choose the US version with emphases on international stories. Beyond that I have it set up with a dozen of my favourite categories, such as Science & Tech, and reduced presence for things I'm not interested in. I am very happy with Google news, and can drill down to get as much coverage as I can possibly read on any story or category of stories.

In fact, these past few nights I tried to go back to watching the nightly news on CBC, something that was a tradition in my family all my life, and I am sure, for very many other Canadians. After the third night in a row after not watching the news on TV for years, I couldn't take it any more. I could not dictate the pace or the topics or the depth or lack of it, and turned it off and went back to reading Google News. The days of watching the nightly newscast on TV are long gone for me, along with the home phone that I gave up two years ago in favour of my cell phone. Times change.

Speaking as a Rhode Islander
Authored by: jplatt39 on Friday, April 19 2013 @ 06:36 AM EDT
I'm not the only New Englander who reads Maclean's or occasionally listens to
the CBC. You aren't missing anything reasonable by getting the news on Boston
from Canadian media. Many of us do have reservations about Google but this
coverage should NOT be one of them. Helen Mann did a good interview about the
Alharbi accusations on As It Happens.

Discontent with Google

You can easily chose which area you want news from and even customize your
choices. If you're not happy with what they give you change what you ask for.
