Good observations about two different kinds of people and two different kinds of
schools which are suitable for the two different kinds of people. The fly in the
ointment is the students who are of one type but are in an institution which is
the other.
Once, I had a student in calculus who protested about learning power series. He
asked why we should learn to calculate such things as the value of "e"
when it "can be found in his calculator" (which BTW is not exactly
true).
I replied that my university trains engineers and they expect us to teach the
students what we are teaching them. The graduates are called engineers. That if
he wants to learn how to push the buttons on the calculator there is a school in
the next town where they have a two year technician program. If that is what he
wants, then he should go there. He did not like me, but what am I supposed to
do? Lie my head off?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
