I have often done the same, use the calculator to verify the result. I have
also often used the things I learned in math to perform shortcuts to obtain an
approximate answer when doing calculations in my head.

And you remind me of my own father, who went back to the university at the age
of 50 to get a degree in naval architecture.
I would like to comment on one thing that you said:

This, I am sure you agree, is *exactly* what too many of our current generation
of students can not do. They are utterly incapable of coming up even with a
ballpark estimate for an answer in their heads, or using a few calculations on a
piece of paper for something really difficult. They cannot see, for example,
when the result of a calculation is obviously so screamingly wrong as to be
totally absurd. I mean, such things as a problem where one drops a baseball off
a building and it takes minus three seconds to hit the ground, that kind of
nonsense. The computer said it is this, so that is the end of the story. And,
most unfortunately, the computer will never teach them how to do this, either.
