He promotes theories about the big bang, black holes, space-time, etc., which
are, as I have recently discovered, totally bogus. Since everyone believes this
stuff, I'll give him a pass.

But to suggest that we need to leave earth for our survival is totally insane.
If Hawking is that cynical, that's one thing, but it means he's totally given up
on humanity's capacity for correcting the problems _we_ have created right here.
Certainly, if we can't fix our environment, how could we even think about
living anywhere else?*

It's time we get our heads out of the stars and focus on the here and now. We
are victims of our own technology. That's coming from a lifelong tech-head.

1. We need ZPG, zero population growth.
2. We need to roll back pollution.
3. We need energy conservation.
4. We need more recycling.
5. other obvious things.

We have solutions, we need to implement them. _That_ is what scientists need to
be promoting.

The fight is against human selfishness and greed. This is the battle we must
fight now. Rich folks can move to places with better air, water, & food.
Someday, this won't be possible, but it doesn't matter, as long as next quarters
profits are up.

Now if we could blast all the selfish & greedy folks into space, well, there
wouldn't be too many people left. Most countries would be left without
governments!

It made me think of Leadbellys tune:

"We're in the same boat brother,
We're in the same boat brother,
And if you shake one end you're gonna rock the other,
It's the same boat, brother..."

* There was an interesting sci-fi piece years ago about a moonbase manned by 3
humans and a robot. IIRC, after starting world-destroying nuclear holocaust,
the instigating governments officials, friends, and families headed for the
moonbase. The base commander, discovering his family was not aboard (and
considering what it would be like to live with such people), configured the
power reactors to destroy themselves and the entire base. I wish I had more
information on this.

I don't particularly like Hawking, either. He's too much the religious fanatic
:-) He is a fanatical atheist, guilty of the same offenses he sees in others...

To paraphrase what he's reported as saying ... "I was brought up to believe
in the voice of authority of bishops telling me to believe in God. That's all
bunkum, you need to believe in the voice of authority of scientists telling you
there is no God".

Sorry - to me that's just plain hypocrisy - and you probably know my views about
Science and Religion :-)

Cheers,
Wol
