And the Compuserve readers TapCIS and Golden Compass were doing this earlier as well.
[And probably many nntp client programs since the inception of nntp]

AOL patents displaying threaded email messages ..
Authored by: bprice on Friday, April 12 2013 @ 01:02 AM EDT
In 1983..1986, I worked with Unix systems (both AT&T and BSD). We used both news and email. The transport was uucp; the message format was close to RFC822. In particular, the MESSAGE-ID header and its dependent headers were just coming into use.

I don't recall which MUA I used; I used rn as my preferred news reader.

For messages from sending MUAs that had the message-id feature, both rn and my MUA displayed the messages in threads, whenever I chose that option, It was kinda strange, though, when news items had expired but dependant posts were still unread... Similar strangeness occurred with both news and mail when I got a reply before I got the original being replied to... That's why threaded reading was still an option.

Threaded email for everyone was widely available for free as Hypermail long ago
...
See message Date: 8 Aug 1994 12:32:29

Original author was Tom Gruber.
Project is still active today as HyperMail and PiperMail
See http://tomgruber.org/technology/hypermail.htm

Back in the day ... I actually used this to publish some MBOX mail archives as
threaded html.
