Mplayer uses ffmpeg to play these files not microsoft code

The files are wmv2 files that ffmpeg's libavcodec can decode. The only video
that it can't are wmv9 files. That would require a different codec.
As for patents, Microsoft says Linux itself violates patents it holds. If you
are going to stop using software for fear of patents perhaps you should not just
limit it to the little bits. To me its a choice of free vs not free. There is
nothing as or more free than Linux. Sadly every piece of software now violates
some patent someone holds, you can't avoid patents and still use or write
software.
