But Netscape used to be software that had to purchased. I
know because my brother in-law purchased a copy of Netscape,
and thought that IE was trash in comparison. Microsoft's
pricing of IE for free as a competitor to Netscape forced
Netscape to nearly collapse as it could not financially
compete with MS who was making it's money from Windows and
Office products, and giving a browser away really made a big
difference for Netscape.
Of course what was good for Microsoft then is bad for
Microsoft now. They can not compete with a free product
either apparently.

I think Netscape started out as shareware - free to copy and try, but buy a
licence if you want to keep it.
The "free"ness of IE was part of a bundle off things with
anti-competitive intent. Note in particular BG's comment about "cutting off
Netscape's air supply", or cash flow. How could he do that if Netscape were
free?
It was MS that started the trend of giving things away for free - now it's
coming back to haunt them :-)
