> One can complain about Neiman Marcus and/or Walmart but they at least have
stuff you want that you can find and pay for.

But can you find the stuff in their stores?

The last time I was in Neiman Marcus, they had a sales person who knew where
things were. (I literally gave her the list, and she walked through the store
with me, picking up items on the list.)

Walmart phased out everybody but the cashiers a long time ago. Now they are
phasing out cashiers.

Radio Shack has IR emitters. Catalog # 276-142. At the first four stores I went
to, the employees either had no idea what an IR emitter was, or else claimed
that Radio Shack did not sell them. (One employee said that Radio Shack never
sold them. No doubt an employee that wouldn't know what a radio shack was, even
if they were put in the middle of one.) I found the IR emitter at the fifth
store, but that was basically luck. There were no employees in the store. (When
I wanted to pay for the emitter, I went to the back room, only to discover it
was also empty. I could have walked out the store, with nobody being the wiser.
(Their in-house video surveillance camera was turned off.) After about twenty
minutes, the entire store team came in, having had lunch elsewhere.)

I'm not sure that a product Google eventually declined to continue (presumably it isn't making them a lot of money) could be an attractive space for their competitors. They aren't even half as keen as Google about goodwill opportunities, either.
