There could well be a difference between firmware and
microcode. Having worked on some minis in my time, the
microcode was actually the program code (usually very wide
instructions) that directed the hardware on how it was
supposed to interpret and therefore carry out the "machine"
instructions that were in memory as a result of compiling
(or assembling) source code....i.e., the user's program.
Firmware was (and is) regular "machine" instructions that
just happen to be embedded (ROM, FLASH, etc.) in a permanent
or semi-permanent memory system that the CPU decodes and
executes. That same CPU may well have microcode that directs
how it actually decodes the firmware instructions.
