I worked on the "firmware" in Data General computers, though it was
called microcode back then. This was the software that allowed the CPU to work.
That Collins gear was all mil spec and designed for use on ships. To swap out
a disk drive on that C-8500 system involved sliding out the drive on it's rails
and then disconnecting power and signal cables, along with a couple of chilled
water lines. Then a device similar to a hand operated fork lift was used to
lift the drive off the rails and lower it onto skid. A heavy plywood box was
then bolted over the drive. Reverse the above to install a drive. Those drives
were about 100 MB, IIRC. They also used something called "frictionless
bearings", which were bands of steel that were bolted to the actuator and
then looped back to bolt to the frame . There were 4 of these around the
actuator and they worked very well.
