Never underestimate the power of software to bring hardware to its knees
Authored by: artp on Friday, April 05 2013 @ 12:14 AM EDT
Back in 1998, I formulated my version of this law. I had
come across a DEC system with 24 processors, 128G of RAM and
several terabytes of storage - no SAN - that had been
dropped to a crawl by a poorly written SQL script.

Yay SQL!

However huge and robust your hardware is, you can always
craft a sufficiently inefficient SQL script that will
overpower the thing, drop it to its knees, gag, bind and
handcuff it, stuff it into a chest and drop it into the
Mariana trench! There is no end to the number of outside
joins that can be done.

Or, as I heard once, a fool can ask more questions than a
wise man can answer.
