All three had versions that were developed by at IBM.

Of the three languages only FORTRAN was primarily done by IBM. COBOL was a joint effort with DOD sponsorship. And BASIC got its start at Dartmouth with two major forks - HP (char. arrays) and Microsoft (strings).

FORTRAN and COBOL are free to implement so long as you follow the published standard. BASIC is a syntactic cesspool that is something like the Wild West. Just don't try to clone one of Microsoft's variants. If you want to clone somebody's dialect try Digital Research's CBASIC.

NB - I've used various BASIC's over the years - HP's at LHS, Honeywell's at CCSF, DEC's on CompuServe, CBASIC and various MS BASIC's on the job, and Atari and Sinclair BASIC's at home. I.D.I.C. !
