Common human behaviour
Authored by: Wol on Thursday, April 04 2013 @ 02:03 PM EDT
People *need* an "us" and "them".

If you think about it, it's an inherent part of the survival instinct. We need
to be part of a tribe, we look out for it, and it looks out for us. So long as
there are enough resources, tribes can peaceably co-exist.

But as soon as resources get scarce, the tribes fight to appropriate them. One
only has to look at the (alleged) behaviour of the US in securing its oil
supplies...

And you'll find that goes right through history. Britain gained its empire as a
side-effect of seeking to secure its ability to trade. The First World War was
an accident of Germany attempting to build an empire to secure its resources.
The War in the Pacific (Pearl Harbour etc) was an attempt to secure Japan's
economic resources.

We all need the security of an "us" to make sure that if things get
tight, "me and mine" come out on top of "you and yours".

It would be nice to think we are civilised and have outgrown all that, but
what's the saying? "We're all only three square meals away from
barbarianism"?

Cheers,
Wol
