You would think that a publisher would at least take a step back
and think hard about what they are doing when they make it their main business
not to publish information to make it known to a wider audience, but to withhold
information and restrict its visibility to a narrow audience of people who pay
for accessing it.
Money is a tool we use to measure how useful
goods and services are to society. The way it is supposed to work is the more
useful you are the more money you get in return. Unfortunately some people have
lost sight of the "useful to society" part the equation and they see money as an
absolute good and an absolute measure of usefulness. It is this blindness that
leads them into business models where they want to get paid for providing a
disservice to society.
--- Our job is to remind ourselves that
there are more contexts
than the one we’re in now — the one that we think is reality.

I use a web framework that was created by a university
professor.
When it came time to buy a manual I asked if he had a
preference if I bought the dead tree version or the
electronic one.
He replied that both gave him the same income, but the
university recognized only the dead tree one as evidence of
publication.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
