Yep. Crate upon crate of unclaimed Windows phones sitting at ports of
entry.

I suppose the iPhone isn't as popular in those countries as in many other
countries. Probably partly due to its high price and maybe even a lack of push
from Apple for those markets. I would be more interested to ask what other
phones are popular in those countries, and how do those phones compare with both
WP and iPhone :p.

are iPhones (and other similar tech) available in Argentina at decent prices?
by decent, I mean similar to those in other developed countries. If there is a
huge import duty slapped on them and there isn't one on the windows phone simply
because of some cough-cough local manufacturing being done in Usuhaia (Tierra
del Fuego) on the windows phone then it is hardly any wonder that the iPhone is
being outsold.

It is easy to boast outselling a rival where the rival isn't being actively
sold.

Statistics, stats and being economical with the truth.

As was pointed out: this is shipments ("imported units"), not retail
sales. Plus, this was pretty clearly targeting a few select countries with an
official market volume smaller than than 100,000 iPhones in each for that
particular quarter.

This reeks of desperation, like most other moves we have seen from Nokia and
Microsoft recently. "Hey, if we ship 500,000 WinPhones to these seven
markets and let them rot in warehouses there instead of at the manufacturer, we
can say we're outselling the iPhone. Sort of."

Hey, I live in one of those countries (South Africa). I've seen adverts for
Windows phones, but I don't think I've actually seen anyone using one yet. I
have seen people using iPhones, though not all that often.

There's quite a few Android phones around, though. I notice that these stats
simply ignore Android.

What version of Windows Phone? At least one phone carrier in Canada is still offering the Nokia 710 as their only Nokia Windows Phone. In other words, Nokia are still unloading old Windows Phone 7 phones in Canada. It's being sold for $200, and the only thing cheaper is an (also out of date) Huawei with Android 2.3 for $150. Those figures are without subsidy (i.e. cash purchase) by the way.

The list of countries in the article sound like the sort of secondary markets where old stock is often unloaded at low prices. Manufacturers do this instead of just scrapping them. A lot of manufacturers don't like to sell off old stock cheaply in primary markets because it depresses demand for their new products. So, they find vendors in places like Ukraine or discount phone networks in primary markets who can dump them cheaply.

The fact that Nokia is still trying to unload Windows Phone 7 phones in Canada tells you just how poorly they originally sold.
