The article isn't that long, so have another look.

It recounts the history of Opus, wherein Qualcomm and Huawei made bogus claims that codes for Opus would necessarily infringe their patents.

Nokia claims it's announcement is "unprecedented". A bit of debunking of that claim is the point of the article; it's business as usual.

While your approval of such practices seems clear enough, you make a different point, specifically claiming that VP8 will be "dead" (your word) if Nokia succeeds in blocking even a single device. With such a clear vision of success, how could CEO Elop fail to revive the fortunes of the once- proud flagship of Finnish phones?
