Skype alternatives to trust?
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, March 27 2013 @ 03:11 PM EDT
One big problem AIUI is that none   of the   alternatives will interact with Skype, and few of them with each other. Another problem will be convincing your contacts that there is a problem and they should change to something you have chosen when the rest of their contacts are still using Skype. The trust part comes not so much from the handling of your traffic, but all of these systems maintain a more or less centralised directory service. The data on these servers is for most systems not ephemeral like a Bittorrent Tracker.

I didn't provide an alternative because.....

I simply don't use the technology yet. My point was that one does have a choice... even if that choice is simply not to use the tech. There's easily probably 50 other ways of communicating including emails, internet conferencing, "old fashioned" chat rooms, etc.

Back to the topic of skype in specific:

I rarely pick up any phone at all. A landline at home hooked into the security system and my cell phone is more then enough to suit my needs. And most of the calls are incoming sales pitches.

And from what the other poster responded with: it's still way too young a technology for my tastes.

How's that for ironic? In some ways I prefer to be in the front-runner of technology yet in others I'd rather lag behind.
