"Barn Raising" literally is when the community would pitch in together, and build a barn, homestead, or other dwelling for somebody who was new in the community, or whose barn/dwelling had been destroyed.

It is still practiced in Amish, Mennonite, and similar communities.

In theory, but not always in practice, you find Freemasons, Oddfellows, Eagles, Elks, and The Grange doing similar things for their members.

If I'm wrong because your using the expression "barn raising" to represent groups of people that I've never heard of before, then please enlighten. I would find that interesting.

To see a good example, check out the Harrison Ford movie "Witness" (warning: some of the language is strong). The protagonist spends some time in an Amish district and while there is invited to participate in a barn-raising. (I'm sure it was an interesting part for Ford to play, given his background as a carpenter.)

See what others have said about barn raising. Another good film that includes a
barn-raising (if not a traditional one :-) is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. A
good laugh, if nothing else ...

As for christians being insulted, I guess (you're anonymous so I don't know)
you're American. And yes, I expect American Christians would be insulted - but
as I said Americans don't know the meaning of the word :-)

As a European Christian, I would be only too happy to live in a communist
society (I think someone here described my political viewpoint as
"anarcho-socialist" - minimal government and maximal shared ownership
- co-operatives etc).

Cheers,
Wol

Book of Acts 4:32-35

32 The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.
33 With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all.
34 There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale,
35 and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.

Karl Marx: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."
