Windows was never designed to be a 'real operating system'(ROS)*

When MS hired Dave Cutler (of VAX/VMS fame) to lead the NT project, they had a
chance to make a ROS. Somehow, they failed. I think they were distracted by the
GUI, by backwards compatibility, by Cutler's attitude toward UNIX, by management
meddling.

(Cutler is on the XBox team now, go figure)

MS is now tasked with turning a sows ear into a silk purse.

I agree they've made progress, but winning the battle won't win the war.

It seems illogical to buy an expensive OS that _requires_ me to _buy_ anti-virus
s/w in order to be usable.

* a phrase I learned from an old VAX/Burroughs programmer a long time ago.
