I am not denying them their ideallic goal of a census, and it is an interesting
method they used.
But rather then just releasing just a proof-of-concept as a warning, they
actively abused their discovery to 'spy' on people's networks with their own
private devices. So I would rate it a higher privacy intrusion then a shaming of
of a public leak after the hole had been closed.
I dont want to lcok them up, but a few weeks of cummunity service to write a
program to detect and patch the holes they discovered would be fitting I think

These devices are ubiquitous. Probably every military base and large
company has at least one.
So it is a major problem. This is the sort of thing that experimenters need to
report, but which will scare the wits out of the 'Powers That Be' who once
again have found that their defenses were lacking.
