In the UK (until recently) you're in part wrong. squatters don't have the right
to stay, but that doesn't mean you have the right to evict them.
You can get them out with a court order, but court orders can be delayed, then
appealed, then got around and twisted. The squatter may be able to get legal
aid, but the home owner may have too many assets to qualify, yet not be able to
afford a lawyer. Lawyers don't come cheap anywhere.
There have been a lot of changes to the law to try to cut down abuses of
squatting but it is still not uncommon here.

Here is an article from last December in the Guardian that would likely seem
very culturally strange to someone from the US, written about the effect of a
new law (last September) in the UK to criminalise squatting. That's right, it
was not effectively criminalised in the UK until last September. The lede of the article:
'Squatters are not home
stealers'
The criminalising of squatters in Britain is part of a
Europe-wide backlash. But with at least 10% of the world population squatting,
can they really be a menace to society?

Sorry, PJ, I should have said that I live on the other side
of the pond (I was sure I had put it in the post, but alas,
it seems that I had just though about it). Here, maybe
they've changed the laws, or maybe it was the big media
yellow journalism getting in the way of the truth (IANAL,
and as I say, I speak from hearsay), but under Spanish law,
until you get that court order (and that comes AFTER the
trial), I believe that you don't have the right to evict
squatters. You may be awarded damages and costs when you win
the trial, but they will declare insolvency, meaning that
you'll be out of the legal fees, and your property will be
probably damaged beyond recognition when the squatters are
