The sentence
"The only point you can make is that the software isn't
viable by people who haven't installed the necessary viewer
for their chosen OS."
Should read

Also there is another

LibreOffice opens .doc files.

That doesn't mean that they are acceptable as a file format for people who
actually think about things.

I'm not saying that the argument proposed is a good one, I'm simply saying that
the conclusion is correct, possibly in spite of the evidence. The good argument
is that single-source formats are a bad thing, and we can't trust MS to not
assert patents over anything that they are pushing, and there's nothing wrong
with OGG-Vorbis/Theora, which ARE free standards, so are a superior option.

And I'll reiterate for anyone having trouble with why people would do this:
Milgram's Experiment.

Is that software covered by patents that the providers of that software have not
lisenced?

Answer: Almost certainly.

Who is most likely to own those patents?

Answer: Someone hostile to Open Source.

WHy are you supporting this?

> 1. The software to view the file is available to all Linux distros.

Yes

> 2. Said software plays the media.

Yes.

Why does this thread exist? Because PJ said she does not
"have the ability to view something in .wvx format,"
Maybe she just hasn't gotten round to installing the needed software,
maybe she has chosen not to. In this patent encumbered world
installing software to read proprietary file formats can be a burden
for users who stop to think what they are doing. Does Richard
Stallman ever view .wmx files? Flip4Mac is a MacOS Quicktime
plugin for viewing .wmv files. They license the patents from MS
and recover the revenue in sales of their writable Pro version.
VLC once had a page on their website advising users to satisfy
themselves about the legal requirements in their country.
That page has disappeared, probably because the US is the
only country where you'll get into trouble, but everybody there
shoots first and reads the license later.
