1980 was a strange time and there was a lot of really good technology that just
never made it.
I never saw a machine that ran the National Semiconductor chip but I did get to
work with a machine running the Digital Equipment Corporation LSI 11/2 bit slice
technology microprocessor.
This was a true 16 bit processor with a three to four year technology edge over
the competition.
The Heath Corporation sold a machine called the H-11 in 1978 that ran on the DEC
hardware, S-100 BUS.
DEC had four years on the market and discontinued the technology because they
thought it was a joke.
If we could go back in time and do the early eighties all over again, what a
difference it could make.
Of all the technology available, the winner was the chip with the greatest
political pull and the poorest technology.
You have to love it.
