But opening up as root after install, with no other
warning or instruction was a "feature" of most
of the BSDs some twenty years ago when I was
researching an alternative to MacOS. I had a remote
shell acct on an Irix box at the time and this
BSD behaviour struck me as weird.

There was something the other day about embedded systems running as root, also
many of the lesser known distros run as root to make them more "user"
friendly. Several of the live CD's may not start as root, but have a default
sudo set up, many mount the local drives as well.
Several systems ask if you want to save to admin password when doing updates so
that you don't have to type it again opening the door for a malicious update.
