On my Nexus 7 I installed ES File Explorer and when you click on the lan tab it
will find anything that has a Samba server, eg. my Mythbuntu multimedia PC and
my Linux desktop. But if I try to setup manually with my username and password
for my desktop it failed.
I just got it to work by changing the Samba server settings on my Linux box to
share Security Authentication Mode from user to share and now I can login with
my setup.

Access how? I use ASTRO file manager (free version with Ads.
Those can be removed for a nominal fee) and this lets you
access:
- any place on your device (local, SD, other...)
- any SMB share on the local network
- google drive
- Box
- drop box
- facebook
- Microsoft Skydrive

Note that this is only a file manager. You can copy the
files to your device, but any opening will require you to
copy the file locally first.

If you want to stream movies/music, DICE media player works
well (no DLNA though. For those, I use Skifta or VPlayer).
