By ensuring that root access is required to set up a server for low numbered
ports it prevents any old user setting up a daemon to listen on the port and
pretend to be the web server, becoming a man-in-the-middle passing on requests
to the real sever, grabbing sensitive data, eg passwords, or serving up
malicious data. Sounded like a sensible security measure - as long as privs are
dropped once the connection is made and the actual server runs.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
